Eligibility Criteria

To apply for a NELFUND student loan, you must meet the following conditions:
  • Nationality: Must be a citizen of Nigeria.
  • Institution Type: Must be enrolled in an accredited public tertiary institution (Federal or State Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, or Vocational Institutions).
  • Institutional Verification Data: Your institution must have uploaded your verified student profile data onto the NELFUND Verification Portal.
  • Academic Status: Open to both newly admitted (freshers) and returning students.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

1.Account Registration:Portal URL: portal.nelf.gov.ng.

Visit the application portal, click Get Started / Apply Now, answer the eligibility prompt (“Are you a Nigerian?”), and enter your email and password to create an account. Verify your email via the confirmation link sent to your inbox.
2.Verification & Authentication:Identity & Academic Checks.

Log in, authenticate your identity using your JAMB Registration Number and NIN. Select your institution from the dropdown list and enter your Matriculation Number or Admission Number.
3.Contact & Bank Account Setup:Profile Completion.

Fill in your current residential address and phone number. Input your BVN, select your bank, and provide your active account number (where upkeep allowances will be disbursed directly).
4.Specify Loan Request:Institutional Charge & Upkeep.

Choose your loan needs: tick Institutional Charges (disbursed directly to your university) and/or Upkeep Allowance (disbursed directly to your bank account).
5.Document Submission & Terms:Uploads & Final Verification.

Upload your JAMB Admission Letter (and fee invoice if required). Review your profile summary, accept the Terms & Conditions alongside the Global Standing Instruction (GSI) mandate, and click Submit Application.

Key Financial & Repayment Terms

  • Interest Rate: 0% (Completely interest-free).
  • Disbursement Structure: Institutional charges go straight to your school’s official account; upkeep funds drop directly into your provided personal bank account.
  • Repayment Timeline: Repayment commences two (2) years after completing the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
  • Deduction Mechanism: 10% of your monthly salary will be remitted automatically via employer deductions or direct self-remittance until fully cleared.
